“Is it working? One two”

Remember that Chris Do conference I went to? Of course you do!

Well, I had the privilege of speaking to the public. I did it, and it was nerve-wracking. It gave me flashbacks of my storytelling competition in primary school which made it uneasy to speak out loud. Long story short, I remember choking on my words and clocking out of that conference promising myself that I would get a mic by the end of the year to overcome that fear.

Fast forward a few months, and I was knee deep in Inktober. Throughout the project, I kept thinking to myself: “I should record this,” or “I should explain my process,” but I kept putting it off because setting things up would take longer than just getting the work done. Especially if I had to hold onto my phone while doing so.

I figured it was about time I fulfilled that promise in July.

🗣️ So, I bought a mic 🗣️

Was it necessary? Maybe not. Will it force me out of my comfort zone to document my process more? Absolutely.

Or at least, that’s what I thought. I’ve used it for a few times now and I feel naked speaking my mind. I’m more of a 60% script, 40% ad-lib kinda guy but speaking my mind as and where I am is s u p e r a w k w a r d.

I tried doing it in the gym, in front of my whiteboard (oh yeah, I bought a whiteboard) and in the car but so far, I don’t feel it getting better. I used to have at least 1 of my hands distracted holding the phone but since I’ve reclaimed both, my body language has been moving mad coy. Look at my hands playing an imaginary piano.

That aside, I’m really pleased with the audio quality. It’s by Hollyland, and it came highly recommended by friends. I even tested it at the gym the other day, the audio was sharper than usual even with Spotify’s Top 50 playing in the background. Side note, if you’re a gym owner, please be advised that no one is going to hit their PR listening to Doja Cat’s ‘Kiss Me More’ at 7am (but I’ve added it to my playlist).

The last thing I wanted to bring up for this entry is the fact that I decided to print my artwork from last month. It’s accomplishing to hold it in my hands and look at it up close. I was recommended a new textured paper to print on too, it’s called ‘Tassle’. It looks like colourful threads that have been intricately weaved together. Really cool, check it out:

Sometimes, it’s really just about showing up, trying something new, and capturing your awkward body language on camera. I don’t need to be an expert at this, I just need to figure it out along the way.

I’m sure this will be the first of many. I’m really looking forward to documenting more of my process. Until then, see you soon.
